FAQs

  • Yes. In many jurisdictions, you do indeed need a permit to demo or remove a pool and/or spa. Removing a pool without the necessary permits can cause significant issues with your property, especially if you ever plan to sell it. Here's why:

    1. Compliance with Local Regulations: Permits for pool or spa removal are typically required to ensure that the work is carried out safely and in compliance with local building codes and regulations. These regulations are put in place to safeguard public safety, protect the environment, and maintain the integrity of your property.

    2. Liability and Safety: Removing a pool involves various safety concerns, including the proper disposal of water, chemicals, and debris. Without a permit, you may not have the necessary inspections to ensure that the work is done safely, potentially putting your property and the surrounding area at risk.

    3. Property Value: When it comes time to sell your property, potential buyers may be hesitant or unwilling to purchase a home with unpermitted pool removal. This can lead to delays, decreased property value, or even legal issues, as buyers may demand retroactive permits or compensation for any undisclosed problems.

    4. Insurance Implications: Insurance companies may also have requirements regarding pool removal. Failing to obtain the necessary permits could impact your homeowner's insurance coverage or result in the denial of a claim if an incident related to the pool removal were to occur.

In summary, obtaining a permit for the demolition or removal of a pool and/or spa is not just a matter of convenience; it's a legal requirement designed to protect the interests of homeowners and the community at large. Don't let a contractor convince you that you don't need one. It's crucial to check with your local building department or permitting authority to determine the specific requirements and regulations in your area regarding pool and spa removal permits. Compliance with these rules ensures a smoother process, preserves your property's value, and keeps you on the right side of the law.

  • 95% of the time we purchase our fill material. You need to be REALLY careful when it comes to FREE FILL DIRT because most of the time the free fill is garbage! It can be filled with organic matter, trash or a high percentage of CLAY which is NOT what you want when filling a swimming pool because It will shrink as it dries and swell when it gets wet. Clay is also very hard to get compacted properly and it doesn’t drain properly. Be very careful of the low bidder… They’re probably bringing you some FREE FILL!

  • If you are going to build a dwelling or put on an addition to the house over ANY portion of the pool, you will need a soils compaction report whether you live in a city or the county. As of Jan. 01, 2011, if you are going to do some type of landscaping or tree planting you will be required to have a soils compaction report performed only if you are located in the County Of San Diego. Always verify with your city’s building department regarding this topic due to changing building codes.
